The Pet Connection, Inc. is a no-kill, nonprofit, cageless animal shelter located in the Kansas City Metro Area. It is our intention to form a no-kill coalition for companion animals within our community by educating the public, providing spay/neuter and other responsible pet owner services and to find homes for unwanted and abandoned animals.
Behavioral Problems
Behavioral problems are the number one reason that people give up their pets. Usually the behavioral problem exhibited is typical of the species. People just do not have the knowledge to train their pets. We do private consultations for individuals who are having problems as well as offer low cost obedience classes.
Realistic Approach
We are providing realistic approaches to animal health and animal training to a wide range of people in varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Being role models as animal-caretakers is the only way to teach society what is really required to own a dog or a cat. We consider ourselves a teaching humane society. Hopefully everyone who leaves our facility has a better understanding of approach, care, and at least witnesses that being homeless doesn’t have to be so destitute. That as caretakers there is something better in between. Most families cannot feel good about placing their pet in a traditional shelter setting, especially if euthanasia is a risk. We are trying to appeal to the true animal lovers, those that want to have an alternative to the “pound” when they die, find a pet on the street, or when they have some circumstances that disallows them to own their pet any longer. They can relax knowing that wrap around services and follow up systems have been put in place to give the pet a best possible chance at his/her new home.
We serve as an adoption center for many groups and individuals who need to find homes for abandoned animals. We refer to area shelters and other humane groups in the hopes of finding more and more pets in our area, permanent and loving homes. We believe that each group needs to work together to accomplish this task.
Limited Space
Since we are a no-kill shelter and have limited space, we can’t take in all animals that need help, even though we would want to. Instead, we keep a waiting list to assist people to the best of our ability. On occasion, individuals will serve as fosters for their own pets until they are re-homed.
Rescuing and Re-homing
The Pet Connection also realizes the importance of rescuing and re-homing animals. We also know that each year there will be more and more animals in need of homes. Therefore, we assist individuals and families with spaying/neutering their personal pets. We also assist with feral cat colonies.
Animals are important
We want to send a very clear-cut message: ANIMALS ARE IMPORTANT. They were domesticated and put here by us and should have a guarantee for care. It is our selves, our friends, our neighbors, our relatives and our society that has created the problem. We ALL need to take responsibility for it.
